#1- Real Estate Licenses Must Be Renewed Every Four Years
You can complete the continuing education requirements anytime during the four years of the license, but the State is very strict and you cannot send in your renewal application until 90 days before your license expires.
#2- You Are On Time If You Complete Your Transaction Online By The Deadline Or If Your Application Is Postmarked By Midnight On Your License Expiration
They do not accept office machine postmarks. On-time fees are $245 for Salespersons, $300 for Brokers, $300 for Officers and $300 for Corporations.
#3- If You Are Late, You Have A Two Year Grace Period To Renew
However, you cannot do any real estate work during this time. When you renew in the grace period, there is a penalty of 50% of the original fee. One item to remember: If your license is due on the 1st of July and you renew on December 15th, your new four-year license will start on December 15th.
#4- The Education Sponsor Must Give Every Student A Proper Certification Of Completion
These certificates must be reported to the State at time of renewal with all fees. Sponsors are not legally permitted to upload this information on the student’s behalf.
#5- There Is One Exemption From This Education
It is called a grandfather clause, as it was put in the regulations when they were written many years ago. Eligibility: if you are older than 70 years of age and have been “a licensee in good standing” for 30 continuous years. That means no sanctions on your record. Of course, since I am an educator, I think that this is a poor rule. If the regulations are designed to protect the public, I think that someone over 70 should still be taking education. I am over 70, and I am still taking classes.
#6- You Can Only Test On A Maximum Of 15 Credit Hours During Any One 24 Hour Period
You must have the textbooks for a certain amount of time before testing.
#7- You Can Apply To Receive Credit For Equivalent Activity Classes From Colleges/Universities/Community Colleges
That are not approved for CE by DRE if the courses are related to course work and are not used to satisfy the prerequisite courses for DRE licensees. Been doing this education for 40 years and have never seen anyone do this; some might have but I have never seen one.
#8- Now For The Requirements For A Salesperson Renewing For The First Time:
- Five separate three-hour courses in the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, and Risk Management; and
- A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and
- The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
#9- The Requirements For A Broker Renewing For The First Time:
- Six separate three-hour courses in the following subjects: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, Risk Management, and Management and Supervision; and
- A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and
- The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
#10- The Requirements For A Salesperson And Brokers For The Second And Subsequent Time:
- One eight-hour survey course covering the six mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Fair Housing, Trust Fund Handling, Risk Management, and Management and Supervision) OR licensees can choose to take each of the mandatory subjects separately; and
- A minimum of 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses; and
- The remaining clock hours required to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may be related to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
#11- Lots Of Confusing Statements And Little Statements That Can Be Missed
Words like Survey Courses and Consumer Protection and Consumer Service.
To clarify, the elective courses can be either Consumer Service to “serve the public” or Consumer Protection to “protect the public”. The six three hour courses are called mandatory courses.
#12- You Must Always Take The 18 Hours Of Consumer Protection, But Any Remaining Hours That You Complete Can Be Of Either Type
The sponsors designate the category of the courses and DRE either approves or disapproves. Student must be told which type of course they are discussing. Most companies have gone to the pattern of having all their courses categorized as Consumer Protection to stop any problems before they start.
#13- Survey Courses Are Eight Hour Courses That Are A Combination Of The Six Three Hour Mandatory Courses
They can be used to replace the six 3 three hour courses after a licensee renews at least once. We do not offer this course. It is too confusing for sign ups. We offer the requirements for a first time broker. IT IS A ONE SIZE FITS ALL TYPE OF AGENTS RENEWING. SAVES SO MUCH TROUBLE FOR EVERYONE.
#14- Courses Would Never Be Approved
That are designed for profitable investing, sales improvement, listing promotion, etc.
#15- NOTE: There Is A New Ethics Course Requirement By NAR
Realtors must now complete an Ethics course every two years. Only exemption: Realtor Emeritus. This is not for non-Realtors. Many licensees do not realize that there are more non-Realtor licensees than Realtors.
Do you still offer online courses for real estate salesperson license renewals?
Elizabeth,
We sent you a email with our different renewal options.
Very valuable information. I really appreciate it.
Thank you
Thanks for the nice comments. You keep reading and i’ll keep writing.
I want this to be easy for my 5th Broker renewal, is there a way1) I sign up for all required courses via internet. OR 2) Go to a 8/16 hour live session(s) that covers it all ?
Mike,
The live renewal covers all 8 subject areas you are tested on, however you take 1 or 8 tests in class. The reason for that is the DRE allows you to test on 15 credits per day. The test taken in class is worth 15 credits, and the remaining 30 credits will be done at the convenience of your home, online.
I did completed 45 hrs licensee renewal course with passing grades though I never was notified that I am successfully completed the licensee renewal course.
I know that I can’t apply or ask renewed license at DRE within 3 mos of the expiration. But it would be wonderful to get a confirmation from duanegomer personnel for confirmation email. My license expires in October.
Upon completion of each course you’re promoted to print your certificate. This is a confirmation of course completion, which you can then submit to the DRE.
i need to renew my license. It’s not the first time renewing.
which classes are those on this list of scheduled classes you an on this e mail.
Ana,
We offer a 45-hour continued education package, which includes all required courses. Our package is approved by the Department of Real Estate.
i just want to find a price for an online or home study CE RE Broker course !!
An email was sent to you with the breakdown of our continued education packages.
My son’s RE license expired about 6 years ago. I need him to help me,
since I’m approaching 80, and still getting calls and referrals from past clients.
What does he need to do to get re-licensed, besides retake the DRE exam?
Thanks-
Vic
Hello Victor,
Please email [email protected] for more details and further assistance.
I recently took my broker renewal course thru your company, you staff was outstanding in every contact question I had.
You should be very proud of them.
Can you send me information on renewing my Brokers license online – this is not my first time renewal
Hi Kelly, everything you need to know is on this article: Update on Renewing Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Licensees.
But in short, you need to complete 45-hours worth of continuing education. Then once you’re within 90 days of the license expiration, show proof of your certificates and pay $300 to renew your license on DRE’s eLicensing website. DRE is picky with the timeframe, they won’t renew if you submit before 90 days, and they will mark up the renewal cost to $450 if you are late up to 2 years after expiration. Our online package fits the bill for every type of renewal whether first time or subsequent renewals. PDF or with a textbook, you can choose the best fit for you here: https://www.duanegomer.com/catalog/real_estate/reading_options.asp
