John Reilly used to pontificate at the annual CAR and NAR Conventions. I never missed a session. He could take complex regulations and make them simple. His books are benchmarks for the industry, especially The Language of Real Estate (8th Edition). I got mine 35 years ago.
His education is impeccable. Ossining NY High School, Hamilton College (Go Alex), and Fordham Law School. For anyone who has been involved in California Realtor Education, he reminds me of my longtime friend Bob Hunt. Having lunch with either of them was interesting and enlightening. They both were writers, speakers, and thinkers. And just nice people. Bob’s speciality was Ethics, and John’s is Regulations.
I asked Google to give me a quick summary of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures of 1974. “The RESPA Act of 1974, also known by its cooler name of Reg Z, is a federal law that protects consumers from hidden costs and predatory real estate deals.”
And the attorneys who were so active in real estate transaction cases are back now with lawsuits concerning realtors who do not understand all the nuances of RESPA. I recommend reading John Reillly’s latest article, “RESPA and RED FLAGS,” in The Data Advocate. You can read the article HERE.
If any of you have ever had RESPA troubles, please let me know. It would not be good if the next person sued was you or me.
Thank you, John. Keep writing, and I’ll keep reading.
