DRE ALERT! STAY INFORMED Continuing Education (CE) Audit Information

When a student completes one of our renewal courses, they receive a completion notice and instructions on how to print their certificate. Please note: we do not report course completions to the Department of Real Estate (DRE).

At the time of license renewal, it is the licensee’s responsibility to certify completion of their continuing education (CE) courses. This can be done either through DRE’s eLicensing system or by submitting the Continuing Education Course Verification (RE 251) form. Licensees must provide the course numbers and completion dates when submitting their renewal.

In the past, DRE has issued diligence notices to licensees if dates were incorrect or courses were invalid. The DRE actively monitors CE compliance. Currently, licensees are randomly being selected to submit certificates for all courses claimed in their most recent renewal. Think of it like the IRS requesting more documentation—it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem.

If you receive a DRE audit letter:

  • Read it carefully.
  • Follow all instructions and meet the deadlines.
  • Compliance typically resolves the issue without further complication.

To protect yourself, retain copies of all CE course completion certificates for at least five (5) years. This ensures you can quickly respond if selected for a DRE audit.

If you’ve misplaced any certificates or have questions, comments, or stories about your audit experience, please contact us at (800) 439-4909 or email [email protected].
