When Not to Say “Yes”

We all know (or should know by now) that when you get a call with a long pause before you hear a voice, that is an automated robot call. These scam calls are becoming more and more sophisticated.

The latest one that I have heard is, “Oh, hi there, I was having a little trouble with my headset. Can you hear me now?”  You absentmindedly say, “Yes”.

That is all the calling company wants.

They record you saying “Yes”.

The company geeks will then take your yes, and work it into another recording. Here you say “Yes” to a subscription to a long list of magazines, for example.

Do Not Say Anything.

All of these scams must be working or they would not keep doing them.

The technical term for this is, “this is careful engineering with an understanding of the human dynamics of natural conversation”. This is by no means a pure chance type of call.

Now, Phones Will Use Technology like Siri and Alexa.

The phones are learning to say “um”, “uh-huh” or even laugh at the right time. Amazon is investing millions into making their socialbots learn genuine chitchat. (Just noticed that Jeff Bezos of Amazon just passed Warren for second behind Bill for richest man in the world. When Amazon was losing billions during its early days, I would have shorted it with everything I owned. Lucky that I did not).

Tip from the experts: Hang up, even if you are lonely.

Thanks for the heads up on ‘Yes’. I let all my landline calls go to an answering machine. If it’s important the caller will leave a message. Solicitation call volume is increasing on my cell phone. If there is a pause, I hang up.
