Bear Bryant’s Famous Checkered Hat
Many years ago when I coached Football, I really liked the black and white checkered hat worn by Bear Bryant.
He kept winning National Championships and is still considered one of the greatest College Coaches ever.
The hats were sold by the University of Alabama, and I wore one all the time at games.
Most people thought it was a little overkill or egocentric (and it probably was), but I loved the hat.
In Search of Another Hat
My hat just wore out, so I sent a letter to Coach Bryant to ask if he knew where I could get one. I got the letter attached from him, immediately. To quote, “The hats were no longer being manufactured, and if I found some to let him know.”
Never found one, but I did find a semi-substitute as you can see on my latest business photo. I misplaced his letter, and recently I was moving some books and there it was in my “Glory of Old IU”, book.
The letter is dated December 29, 1982. Sorry to say, but Bear Bryant passed away the next month on January 26, 1983 at age 69, way too young. He had many more National Championships waiting.
As one famous coach said, “He could take his’ns and beat you with youran’s and then he could take youran’s and beat you with his’ns”.
